Princess Diana

This is probably way out of left field, but I received a book about Princess Diana as a birthday present yesterday, and it got me thinking about the fact that her death basically coincides with the beginning of book seven, assuming the action starts at the end of the summer as it usually does. Considering that this series is so deeply rooted in England, that the affairs of the Muggles are receiving more focus as of the sixth book, what with that odd conference in the first chapter, and that her funeral was one of the most iconic moments of my generation, I just wonder whether it will tie into the book at all. Actually, the ceremony at the end of book six was reminiscent of that memorial; certainly it was an event of comparable proportions in the wizarding world. Anyway, I doubt it will come up, but when I realized the timing of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, I couldn't help but wonder...

You know, it's interesting but I often forget about the whole HP timeline. But if you go by the big time-marker Rowling dropped with Nearly Headless Nick's birthday in CoS, then you're right, Harry's final school year would be 1997-1998. (Hmm...does that make him about the same age as you are? Or a bit older? Just curious...)

Somehow I can't picture JKR making such a specific reference to a real world event/person though. I know a lot of people have said that her prime minister in HBP is "spot on" for Tony Blair (mannerisms, speech patterns) but she still never comes out and says that's who he is.

It will be interesting to see if she begins DH with Harry's POV or in the muggle world again!

Yes, I think it would be strange for her to make such a specific reference, but you never know... And you're right, after I was thinking about this, I realized that Harry and I are pretty much the same age; he's about six months older. Oh, how different my middle and high school years could have been... :-P
