Getting a Reprieve (Deathly Hallows Spoilers)
Evidently J. K. Rowling revealed in an interview with Meredith Vierra the identity of the character who got a reprieve, but while I'd gotten the impression she meant in the seventh book, it actually was in the fifth, and it was Arthur Weasley, who she just couldn't bear to kill. And I can see why; he's such a wonderful man, and I was terrified for him in Order of the Phoenix. I'm so glad she decided to spare him, though it sounds as though she killed off Lupin in his stead. And evidently I misread or misremembered the bit about the two characters dying; it was two more characters than she's initially intended. If Lupin is one, I wonder who the other is?

That's right...Rowling never said that only two major characters would die, rather that two more would die than she had originally planned in the final book. I think she got misquoted a good bit; when you add some wishful thinking into the mix, I think a lot of people were thinking there might only be two major deaths. But that doesn't seem very realistic, given the scope of the war...
I was surprised too, to read that Arthur was the character she meant, and that the reprieve referred to book 5. I'm not surprised that she considered killing him off; he certainly came close to death in OotP, and given what we see happen with Nagini and Snape in DH, it's really a miracle that he survives (I don't entirely understand it, in fact). I'm glad she spared him though. I am very fond of Arthur!
I have always suspected that Lupin might die, partly because I thought Pettigrew would and that would mean the death of all the marauders (which I find quite sad). I wonder if Tonks or Mad-Eye wasn't the other one she decided on late.
Yeah, I kept thinking, "Well, really, two characters isn't very many at all, considering what dire circumstances we're under. And if that includes Voldemort..." I guess I was clinging to optimism with the misinterpretation!
If she didn't originally intend Lupin to die, I guess it sort of makes sense that she would kill off Tonks too, take them together and in so doing almost parallel Lily and James's sacrifice...
Just read an article where Rowling said it was Lupin and Tonks...
