The Keeper of the Keys

I had to write at least one poem about Hagrid before the last book hits. This one goes back to the fourth chapter of the first book and his fateful delivery of Harry's letter. Hagrid, you can knock down my door any day. Just be sure to put it back afterward...

A Visit From Hagrid

Emerging from the stormy haze,
He towered on the fallen door,
But tenderness was in his gaze
As he beheld the startled lad
He’d gently cradled years before.
Young Harry, watching in a daze
As raindrops puddled on the floor,
Thought maybe he was going mad.

But who could dream up such a man,
With whiskers like a tangled hedge,
With palms as vast as frying pans
And boots that made the floorboards shake,
Whose rumbling voice produced a pledge
Of happiness, proposed a plan
To leave and offered not a wedge
But an entire birthday cake?

No, Harry chose to trust his eyes,
His ears, his wildly thumping heart
While Hagrid raged about the lies
The spiteful Dursley clan had spread.
He always had felt set apart,
But only as a child despised,
And now it gave his soul a start
To learn that he was loved instead.

Amazement flooded through his veins
As Hagrid stroked his hairy face
While, undeterred by icy rains,
The Dursleys fled into the night.
“All right there, Harry?” Hagrid’s grace
Had freed him from a life in chains;
His answer was a firm embrace.
He never had been more “all right”.

Jo Rowling would love these poems. I know I do!

You've definitely got a soft spot (a huge one!) for Hagrid, yes?! I do love this scene, and you've captured it brilliantly, as always.

Aw, thanks! :) I definitely do have a soft spot for Hagrid! And while I have several complaints about Sean Astin's portrayal of Sam Gamgee - though a lot of those have more to do with the screenplay - I can't imagine a better Hagrid than Robbie Coltrane. He's perfect!

I wonder if he and Voldemort might come face to face at any point. He had such close interaction with him when they were teenagers; Tom Riddle victimized Hagrid long before he was famous. Hagrid's magical skills might be limited, but can't you just see him trying to plow Voldemort down?

Oh yes! I'd love to see Hagrid play in role in Voldemort's ultimate downfall. It was so rotten what Tom Riddle did to Hagrid when they were younger. If it hadn't been for Dumbledore's unshakeable faith in Hagrid, it really could have been a moment that ruined Hagrid's life.

And I'm with you on loving Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid. Hard to imagine anyone else in that role!
