The Pride of Gryffindor
"Give me courage," whispers Neville as he clutches
The golden trinket tightly in his fist.
He has never wanted anything as much as
This chance to join the battle, to resist
Evil forces sent to torture and to frighten,
And steeling for the conflict that will come,
Neville searches, and his trembling fingers tighten
Upon a crumpled wrapper from his mum.
Like a talisman, its presence holds him steady.
A fierce affection hardens every limb,
And he somehow knows that she would say he's ready,
Would see his strength. Her senses have gone dim,
Cruelly twisted, like his father's, by the specters
Who terrorize his spirit in the night,
But, perceiving both his parents as protectors,
He vows to follow them into the fight.
Timid clumsiness is stricken from his manner;
Ferocity defies the urge to quake.
With the noble name of Longbottom his banner,
He goes forth, not an eagle or a snake.
Though he shares the badger's love of all things growing,
This gentle student, with a mighty roar,
Once again becomes a lion, bravely showing
The enemy the pride of Gryffindor.

Erin, wow. Just wow.
Thank you so much for writing and posting this. I'm glad to know I had a tiny part in inspiring this poem!
Your writing gift is really amazing!
Thank you! :) And you really had a big part - I just couldn't get that Neville the Lion image out of my head... ;)
Erin, is it possible I could share your poem with Janet Batchler? She made some terrific comments in the A&E special about Neville's Gryffindor courage, and I think she would love this poem.
Let me know if it's OK to share it!
Hi, Beth! Just read your e-mail and shall respond soon, but my mom wants to use the computer so I thought I'd bop over here first and say share away! I hope she enjoys it. I watched the first two segments of the A&E special and will watch the others soon. Really enjoying it!
This is so beautiful...so eloquent.
Someone PLEASE see that JK Rowling gets to read this exquisite poem.
Just seeing this now, and just wanted to say thank you very much. :) It would be really neat to share some of my poems that have sprung from Rowling's brilliant writing. I suspect that she has been a real wellspring of inspiration for many; couldn't begin to guess how many poems have their roots in her world...
